Air contains 78% of nitrogen and 21% of oxygen. They can be separated by the method of fractional distillation of liquid air.

Liquefying the air

·         Air is filtered to remove dust.

·         Air is then cooled in stages until it it reaches –200°C.

·         At this temperature air becomes a liquid.

·        Oxygen liquefies at –183ºC

·        Nitrogen liquefies at –196ºC

·        Therefore, Oxygen liquefies first.
