NEW DELHI: A portion of a road in east Delhi’s Krishna Nagar area has been completely blocked since Thursday night after striking sanitation workers continue to dump garbage there.
According to the residents, the filth and stink have made their life miserable, besides posing serious health risks. When TOI visited the area, it saw garbage trails leading up to the residents’ doorsteps. Three days ago, a pile of garbage could be seen near the dhalao, which has now covered the entire road, forcing the residents to take a different route for daily their commute.
The strike started 11 days ago after East Corporation failed to pay them two months’ salary.
On Friday morning, traffic jams were reported from Krishna Nagar after the narrow road has been rendered unusable due to the garbage dumped on it.
The stink of rotten vegetables and other solid waste has made the area unhygienic, which may start affecting people’s health soon, say residents.
“There are flies everywhere in our area because of this garbage and it may cause health problems. Our house stinks all the time and we are using incense sticks to get rid of it,” said Dhruv Mehta, a resident of Krishna Nagar.
Laxmi Nagar is the worst hit as the entire carriageway of a road is covered with tonnes of garbage. This has led to traffic jams since motorists have been forced to use only one carriageway.
