While decoding a manuscript the historian faces several challenges :

  • There were no printing presses those days so scribes were copying  manuscripts by hand. While copying scribes small changes were introduced - a word, a sentence etc.
  • These small differences grew over centuries of copying until manuscripts of the same text became substantially difference from the original one.
  • As a result historians have to read different  manuscripts of the same text to guess what the author had originally written.
