Explanation:
I went to Iceland for the first time over Christmas last year. It was supposed to be a quick jaunt in and out with some relatives who wanted to try to catch the Northern Lights (though we would have no luck), so I hadn’t done much pre-trip research, leaving it up to my London-based cousin to plan our week there. As such, I hadn’t known what to expect of Iceland aside from what I’d seen of it in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and Game of Thrones. We spent two days out in the country on the quintessential “Golden Circle” and “South Coast” tours, and then I spent four days in Reykjavik, which I hadn’t expected to take to as much as I did. Suffice to say, I enjoyed my time in Iceland so much I ended up working backwards and doing copious amounts of research after my trip. I bulldozed through a bunch of books by Icelandic authors, watched Icelandic films, listened to Icelandic bands, and browsed Icelandic blogs. And every time I came across something that I’d missed during my trip I wondered when I would be able to go back again and really travel Iceland, when the weather conditions would presumably be less prejudicial to my very average driving skills. Hopefully, that isn’t too far away, but until then, here are some things I’ve learned about this surprising little country. And it is little — at least, littler than you probably thought.
