One alternate ending could be that the six people could have gave their logs to lit up the dying fire only if they had a little compassion in their heart. The rich could have helped the poor and the poor could have forgotten about the sufferings he got from the rich people. The black man could also have forgotten about the resentment and disgrace his race suffered because of the whites. The religious man if truly believed in God, would have helped the other people and the last nan could have forgotten about his selfishness. Only if they had forgotten about the hatred towards each other, they all would have survived.
