The Emerald City, often known as the City of Emeralds, is the fictional Land of Oz's capital city and is first introduced in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum.

The Emerald City, which is situated in the middle of the Land of Oz, marks the end of the fabled yellow brick road, which starts in Munchkin Country. The Royal Palace of Oz is located in the heart of Emerald City. The city is typically described as being made of green glass, emeralds, and other jewels in the Oz books.

It was described as all green in earlier literature. Later works, however, only used green as the main hue while additionally using gold to embellish structures and people's clothes.

The city itself is not green in the first novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900), but the walls are. However, when they arrive in the Emerald City, everyone is required to put on green-tinted glasses. This is justified as an effort to shield their eyes from the "brightness and splendour" of the city, but it really gives the impression that the city is greener than it actually is because it is "no more green than any other city." This is just another "humbug" that the Wizard has concocted.

The characters in The Marvelous Land of Oz (1904) are initially required to wear the glasses, but in contrast to the book's predecessor, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900), halfway through the book, no more eyeglasses are seen and the brilliance is not mentioned. However, the city is still described as being green.
