A Goan village baker used to sell all kinds of bread loaves. He used to come in the morning with a basket of bread loaves on his head. He made a musical entry on the scene with the jhang–jhang' of his bamboo stick. He used to wear a peculiar dress known as the 'kabai'.The baker used to enter with the Jingling sound of his specially made bamboo staff. His one hand supported the basket on his head and the other banged the bamboo on the ground.

Let me tell you how puzzled I was about the
name of a little boy this morning. He is an
Indian boy from an Indian family settled in
this country. The boy and his parents were
applying for his admission to the school,
so I tried to get acquainted with them. The
boy’s name was written as Nikhil in the
application, so I addressed him by that
name. But he just kept looking at his feet, as
if he hadn’t been spoken to. I wondered if
he understood English and his father assured
me he did. After fi rst trying in English, he
bent down and spoke to his son in an Indian
language, but I heard him calling him by a
different name.
Now I understood why the boy did not
respond to me when I called him by the
name written in the application form. But
the father insisted we call him Nikhil. So
after he left, I asked the boy what name he
would prefer. The boy clearly preferred the
name his parents called him. I thought so. It
is so important for a child to be comfortable
at school. We needed to provide him with a
space that is not threatening. So I decided to
call him by the name he wanted. I conveyed
the same to his parents. It is important that
parents understand what the children prefer
even if it is something as elementary as
choosing what they want to be known as.
