Imagine yesterday you left your house at 6:30 am for your school. After completing this journey of 3 km you found that the school was closed and came back to your home at 7:45 am. Find (i) the distance travelled by you, and (ii) your final displacement.

The answer is 6km and 0 km.

Given,

The distance between house and school = 3km

To Find,

The total distance traveled =?

The final displacement =?

Solution,

The total distance of the journey = Distance traveled by going to school + Distance traveled by coming back home

The total distance of the journey = 2(Distance between home and school)

The total distance of the journey = 2 * 3km

The total distance of the journey = 6 km

The final displacement = Distance traveled by going to school - Distance traveled by coming back home

The final displacement = 3 - 3 = 0 [As final point is same as the initial point]

Hence, the distance traveled by you is 6 km and my final displacement is 0.

Left home at = 6:30  am

returned home at= 7.45 am

Distance between home and school= 3km

The total distance of the journey = Distance traveled by going to school + Distance traveled by coming back home

The total distance of the journey = 2(Distance between home and school)

The total distance of the journey = 2 x 3km

                                                          = 6 km

The final displacement = Distance traveled by going to school - Distance traveled by coming back home

(A displacement is a vector whose length is the shortest distance from the initial to the final position)

The final displacement = 3 - 3 = 0 [As final point is same as the initial point]

Hence, the distance traveled by you is 6 km and final displacement is 0.
