A bird should view its cage as its place of safety. The rule is to get the biggest cage you can afford. There should be a variety of toys and perches, good food and clean water. A well cared for bird should get plenty of interaction and exercise. Assuming their physical, as well as mental and emotional needs are met, their cage should be the place where they feel safe and secure. Unfortunately, for some birds a cage can be a prison.

A more personal example:

My cockatiel Bella is rather spoiled. I leave her cage open so she can come and go as she pleases, with supervision, and lock her in only for her safety. She puts herself to bed at night. She nipped my mom, so my mom scolded her. Bella climbed into her cage and shut the door in my mom's face. I wish I had a video, because if I hadn't seen it I never would have believed it.
