                         Magadha was one of 16 territorial units termed as mahajanapadas, which included both kingdoms and republics. The Magadha was in South Bihar which developed as the powerful kingdom. The other important dynasties to rule Magadha was the Nanda dynasty, founded by Mahapadma Nanda. The Magadha administration was distributed into judicial, executive and military functions. Moreover, the villages of Magadha had their own assemblies which were placed under the rule of local chiefs known as  'Gramakas'. It was under the rule of powerful monarchy with a large standing army.

         There was monarchy in Magadha empire. Magadha eventually emerged as most powerful mainly because of its peculiar geographical location. The taxes collected by the state machinery enabled the Magadhan rulers maintain a strong army. Their use of elephants gave them an added advantage over their enemies.
