It wasn't possible to use pen or pencils to write. But astronauts had to make notes on what they saw. To overcome this problem space pen was invented by the Fisher Pen Company. The space pen has nothing to do with gravity.The cartridge is pressurized with nitrogen at 35 pounds per square inch. This pressure pushes the ink towards the pen's nib.
Well, i had read a blog of one of the astronauts , it was written that he believed the common myth that due to lack of gravity the ink doesn't fall. But it is not the thing. Later it turned out it was due to surface tension (the tension of the surface film of a liquid caused by the attraction of the particles in the surface layer by the bulk of the liquid, which tends to minimize surface area.) is the one responsible not the gravity. Gravity doesn't play any role. So you can write you know with a normal ballpoint pen.
