My instant reaction is one of overwhelming sadness. I’m sure that most owners of caged birds love them and care well for them but I always want to ask…”Is the bird given the opportunity to fly, even if only indoors?” It makes me wonder how I would feel if someone loved me, cared for me but kept my legs shackled so that I couldn’t walk! Do we really need to keep birds caged? It seems such a selfish thing to do. Near where I live is a man who has a small bird in a cage. Every morning he hangs the cage outside next to the front door of his house. I can only assume he’s trying to be kind to the bird, giving it fresh air and something to look at…who knows? But when I look at it I want to weep! How must this beautiful creature (who has the gift of flight) feel as he watches all the wild birds soaring through the air right in front of him?? It breaks my heart!
