Speech on the impact of violent computer games on children's development

Good morning everyone,

Being the class monitor is not a very pleasant job, and you all know why. So many times I have to step in when a fight begins. Have you ever thought about what it is that makes us angry and violent? You will be surprised to know that the video games we play each day have a strong role here.

In-depth research conducted in many countries has shown that video games that are violent are extremely popular. While the players get a kick out of shooting people and killing them with all sorts of objects, including pans, the truth is that the players are actually losing control over themselves. The idea of violence and bloodshed takes over their mind. The brain that should ideally be used to think creatively about academics and hobbies, begins to focus only on the strategies to be applied during the games. Even during classes, the mind is elsewhere, and not paying attention to what is being taught. Obviously, the grades start dropping, parents and teachers begin to question us and we start getting irritated.

We spend even more time on the games, to ‘relax’. What we don’t realise is that we are only becoming increasingly addicted to the games and that is making us increasingly irritable and aggressive. We get offended at the slightest things, easily get into arguments and fights. Gradually we become more and more violent, but we never stop to think about what is happening. It does not cross our minds that the root cause is the video game that we enjoy so much! We feel that the world does not understand us and start isolating ourselves, The truth is that we don't undertsand ourselves. All we need to do is think about it and decide what it is that we really want. Do we want to keep struggling with studies, parents and teachers and not have any peace of mind? Or do we want to decide our video game time limits and have control over our own lives? The ball is in our court.
