Imagine you as the narrator of the story 'the signalman'. How did you feel on learning of the death of signalman? Do you feel any regret? Could you have possibly done anything to prevent his death?

The driver of the train tries frantically to signal the signal man to get out of the way.The signal man  is staring intently at something and does not look up. the driver covers his face to hide from seeing the hapless signal man crushed to death by the train.
