Dear Diary:

Today is the anniversary of the earthquake catastrophe that struck Bhuj! I can never ever forget that day! Buildings collapsed, earth was rent into two parts. A chasm many hundred meters deep appeared in the plates. Thousands of people died. Property worth billions of dollars was turned into rubble! I thank God until this day for saving my entire family. If we had not been traveling to Ooty at that time, we would surely have died. On return we saw our home razed to the ground. However, many of my friends and their families suffered irreparable losses. Would that tragedy never ever have happened! May the souls of all those who perished in that tragedy rest in peace!

I’m still not able to get over the jitters faced by me on the day of 15th January, 2015.  It was horror filled day.  We were all in school, doing our lessons.  In some classes, lessons were being explained by the respective teachers.  Suddenly we felt the tremor.  Our chairs and tables started shaking violently; walls started creaking; books started falling from the racks and there was panic everywhere.

We were asked to leave everything and get out of the classes.  Though the teachers were trying to control the noise and chaos, we were out of control, running madly out of the classes.  Students who were coming down the stairs were pushing and fortunately our Physical Education Teachers took control and thwarted a stampede which was likely to have happened.

We were out on the play-ground, far away from the trees. All of us cuddled together and stood there, frightened.  Luckily, the tremor was less and it stopped with the first tremor itself.  Our parents were worried and started crowding our school compound.  The school declared holiday and the teachers sent us only with our parents.  We came home without our books and belongings.  We couldn’t enter our house but I felt safe being with my parents. After the announcement came that we could enter our house, we went inside.  There were repairs to be made but we were all alive!
