Messages are short way to express one's thoughts in case of absenteeism, due to certain circumstances. Letters are used to express feelings of a person usually living in a far off place. Or formal places like higher authorities.
Messages can also be written when you had a telephonic conversation by a friend of your sister while she's out.

Messaging Someone Isn't same as Letter Writing, Email/Gmaîl Are also not, unless It's Very Formal.For friends, relatives..etc. you can just casually talk to them, by messãgês.Letter writing is totally different from mêssãgïñg.
