Abel Merry-weather is a character of the play written by Stanley Houghton named The Dear Departed, in which the harsh reality of the middle class English society is brought up.

The feelings of Abel Merry weather can be written as a diary writing and it can be the case when he gets to know the truth behind his daughters gathering and is disgusted by their behavior and decides to leave the house.

Dear Diary,

Date: 29th November, 2019.

Day: Friday.

Time: 11: 30 pm.

As I have already written to you that I was very upset with the behaviour of my eldest daughter and her husband, who is also my son- in- law. But, I must tell you that they are not treating me well and I’m just a bunch of insurance Papers and money for them.

Today after the breakfast, I dozed off to sleep and immediately after that I was in deep slumber. When I woke up after 3- 4 hours, to my surprise I saw my granddaughter Victoria in my room and she got all scared after seeing me move. I wasn't able to understand that and when I came out I saw my younger daughter and her husband there.

At fast, I was delighted to see them but, then I realized that they were there to settle the property between them because they thought that I was dead. It was like a deep blow to my heart seeing my own daughters being so cruel to me, it still pains me to write about it.

But, now I've decided that I’m not going to live in this household anymore. I have decided that I’ll make my will and will donate all my property to charity and would also leave this house by dawn tomorrow and will live the rest of my life with my old friend Mr. X. I’ll write to you soon.

Abel Merry-weather.
