Reminiscences of the Earthquake at Badrinath
Some experiences are unforgettable. However hard you try, they keep haunting you repeatedly! I had my rendezvous with apocalypse while visiting Badrinath, one of the holiest shrines of the Hindus.
Well, it had been a clear and peaceful day! The long line of devotees stood reverently waiting for their turn to pay obeisance to the Image of Lord Badrinath. In the distant horizon stood tall snow-clad peaks of the Himalayas. The echoes of the holy bell from the temple reverberated incessantly, making the ambiance more holy.
All of a sudden, everything started shaking; the nearby buildings began to collapse. People began shouting and screaming in panic. Many people were injured in the stampede. Many more got buried under the rubble. Fortunately, the place where I and my family were standing, no building collapsed there. My father acted wisely, he took us and other people to an open area.
By the time the earthquake subsided, much damage had been done. The rescue operations started after two hours. Since the roads had been ripped apart at many places, the helicopters transported the devotees trapped near the temple. We were also flown to RishiKesh.
Later in the news we were shocked to see the colossal loss of human life and property. My family thanked God for saving all of us in that tragedy.
