Explanation:

While negotiating with Shylock for Bassanio’s loan, Antonio warns Bassanio that Shylock can be manipulative. Antonio describes Shylock as a “villain” who lies for his own purposes. While Antonio speaks from his personal opinion, readers become aware that many others feel this way about Shylock.

I am bid forth to supper, Jessica. There are my keys.—But wherefore should I go? I am not bid for love. They flatter me. But yet I’ll go in hate to feed upon The prodigal Christian. (A II, s v)

While speaking with Launcelot and his daughter Jessica, Shylock’s bossy demeanor reveals him to be a contradictory individual. As he discusses the dinner invitation he received from Bassanio and Antonio, he complains that the invitation is not motivated by friendship but by business. In the next breath, he reveals he’ll attend to spite them. He wants acceptance as an individual, but he reacts with equal hatefulness to the very hatred he decries.

A bond of this nature was designed by my client Shylock as his primary motive for wanting a pound of Antonio's flesh if the bond was not paid in time, was to take vengeance.

  • At the time that Antonio signed the bond as guarantee for the loan Shylock made to Bassanio, the moneylender Shylock, had no clue that Antonio would later experience bad luck and lose his ships.
  • He had, however, included this as a condition in the contract, obviously hoping that Antonio would not be able to pay and that he would then be able to have his revenge.
  • The reason for Shylock seeking revenge is clearly stated in the aside he utters in Act 1, scene 1 where he says that he hates Antonia as he is a Christian, he lends money at low rates which brings down the actual rate of interest and Antonio hates Shylock’s religion.
  • As Shylock had nothing to lose whilst Antonio, contrarywise, could pay with his life.

Shylock thought that the law was on his side and that his plea for restitution was justified. Antonio was, after all, of sound body and mind when he signed their contract.
