Answer:

The sepoys or native Indian soldiers had many grievances against the British East India Company administration. The reasons which provoked them to rebel in 1857 were:

1. A large number of Indian soldiers were employed in the British army. But they were not given any high posts.

2. There was a great deal of difference between the salaries of the British and Indian soldiers. Indian soldiers were paid Rs. 7 per month while the British soldiers got Rs. 150.

3. Indian soldiers were forced to travel across the seas to fight. They considered this to be inauspicious.

4. A new Enfield rifle and the greased cartridge were introduced in the army. The soldiers had to bite off the top of the cartridge before loading the rifle. It was rumoured that the cartridges were greased with lard or pork fat and tallow or cow fat. This hurt the sentiments of both the Hindu and Muslim soldiers. The Hindus consider the cow to be sacred and do not consume cow meat and the Muslims consider pork to be unclean.

The soldiers felt that it had been introduced on purpose to defile their religious purity. So they rebelled against the British.
