Military Leadership - An Officer Corp:the Sepoys were well oiled in battle, war and field craft from the various campaigns they took part in. However experience in strategic decision making and battalion level tactics were simply missing as the men were usually officered by the British. Apart from isolated cases, the Sepoys were led by contemporary versions of JCOs today who were not adept in flowing field battles.

Strategy: Apart from costly victories from engagements with smaller EIC elements, the Sepoys were crushed each time they engaged larger columns of the Europeans in frontal attacks. The enemy’s cavalry tactics through well heeled formations were simply unbeatable because the Indians never had to face such European formations before. At least not the Purbiyas (the Madras Regiment did so battling the French in the South). The Europeans with their cavalry had greater mobility.
