Summary
A giant had a beautiful garden. It had soft green grass and twelve peach-trees. School children used to visit it to play there in the evening when they came from school. Once, the giant went out to see his friend, Carnish ogre. He stayed at his house for seven years. After this , he returned to his own castle. To his surprise, he found the children playing in the garden.
“My garden is my own garden”, he said to himself. So,he built a high wall around it.Then he put up a notice board declaring that “TRESSPASSERS WILL BE PROSECUTED”.It was clear that he had become selfish.
Now the Children felt very sad. They had no place to play. So, they played outside the garden around the wall.Time went on. In the spring, flowers grew all over, but in the Giant’s garden, there was no spring. There was no summer also.It was always winter there. Neither birds nor flowers could be seen there. Only snow and frost covered the trees. The Giant wondered as to why there was no spring in his garden.
Once the Giant lay in his bed awake. He heard a sweet music.A little linnet (A bird) sang outside his window The music appealed to him. The sweet smell of flowers passed through his nostrils. He saw the most wonderful sight. Children had crept in through a hole.Children sat on branches. The trees were covered with flowers. In the farthest corner of the garden a little boy was sitting. He was too small to climb on the branch. He cried bitterly. The giant went up to him and kissed him. He picked him up and placed him on a branch.
Now the Giant knocked down the garden wall. He felt sorry for building it. When children saw him, they ran away. The garden became winter like again. He called out the children and said, “It is your garden. Come and play freely.”
In the evening, when they came to him to say goodbye, he asked them about the little child. They said they did not know. The Giant loved him the most. Now due to children’s frequent visits the spring returned.
Many years passed. The Giant had become old. He could not play anymore. One day suddenly he saw the little child he had loved. He went downstairs and walked near him. However, he felt angry to see his wounded palms and feet. On asking who had wounded him, he replied, “These are the wounds of love.”At this, the Giant fell on his feet, “I’ll let you play in my garden which is paradise” said the little child, “Because you let me play in your garden once.”
I n the evening, when the children visited the garden, they saw the Giant lying dead.
Answer:
If I was a protagonist (as a child in the story) of the selfish giant then this would've been the experiance-
After school, One day I saw my friends running towards a garden. The garden had breath taking beauty. I went and played along with my friends too. We enjoyed ourselves very much playing in the garden. We said to ourselves "How happy we are here!" We thought that we were the happiest creatures in the world and nothing could take away this happiness.
But alas, we were gravely mistaken.
One day, while usually playing in the garden,we saw a Giant! He shouted in a gruff voice, "What are you doing here?"
His voice itself frightened all of us so we ran away. “My own garden is my own garden,”said the Giant; “anyone can
understand that, and I will allow nobody to play in it but myself.” So he built a high wall all round it, and put up a notice-board:
TRESPASSERS WILL BE PROSECUTED
We had now nowhere to play now. We tried to play on the road, but the road was very dusty and full of hard stones,
and we did not like it. We used to wander round the high walls when our lessons were over, and talk about the beautiful garden inside. “How happy we were there!” we said to each other.
We were very sad, then after some months one of my friends discovered a hole in the wall. We all crept through that hole. Oddly it was very cold when we entered and there were no flowers. But soon enough the flowers started to bloom and the temperature became warm again. The birds also started to come in and sing and chirp.
Then we saw the Giant! We ran away out of fear!
But a boy who we have never seen before didn't run away. And oddly there was a winter kind of aura surrounding him. I was very afraid of what's going to happen to the boy because the Giant was walking towards him!
But then I saw the Giant pick up the boy gently and put him in the tree the boy was trying to climb. Then I saw the boy kiss the Giant! Oh no! I thought that was the limit and that the Giant would kill him! But the Giant didn't do anything to the boy. Instead he actually seemed more friendly. So we dared to go near him.
He said, “It is your garden now, little
children,” and he took a great axe and knocked down the wall. And when the people were going to market at twelve o’clock they found the Giant playing with us in the most beautiful garden they had ever seen. All day long we played, and in the evening we came to the Giant to bid him good-bye.
“But where is your little companion?” he said; “the boy I put into the tree?” The Giant loved him the best because he had kissed him. “We don’t know,” answered someone out of us. “He has gone away.”
“You must tell him to be sure and come tomorrow,” said the Giant. But we said that they did not know where he lived, and that we have never seen him before; and the Giant felt very sad at this.
Every afternoon, when school was over, we came and played with the Giant. But the little boy whom the Giant loved was never seen again. The Giant was verykind to all of us, yet he longed for his little friend, and often spoke of him. “How I would like to see him!” he used to say.
Years went by, and the Giant grew very old and feeble. He couldnot play about anymore, so he sat in a huge armchair, and watched us at our games and admired his garden. “I have many beautiful flowers,” he said; “but the children are the most beautiful flowers of all.”
Then one noon, when we went to his garden as usual to play, we saw him lying dead under a tree and covered with white blossoms.
We didn't know what happened and many of us cried for a long time. It was a little difficult for us to get over his death, but eventually we did. His body was buried in his garden and we prayed for him to rest in peace everyday.
Some said God himself came to take him to heaven and some said other stories. But whatever the truth was, we missed the Giant.
Hope this helps you...
