Dear diary,
I as depressed regarding the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and felt that the atomic bombing of Japan was unnecessary.
I originally agreed to sign a 1939 letter which prompted President Frankln Roosevelt to pursue construction of an atomic bomb. However, Einstein agreed with the letter-writers only under the assumption that the Nazis were pursuing the bomb themselves (as they in fact were) and the fear that we might require the atomic bomb to defeat them.
When the Nazis were defeated without the use of the bomb, I felt that his original justification for encouraging Roosevelt to pursue the project was gone, and that bombing Japan was unnecessary as they were already well on their way to surrender. In 1946, I was quoted by the New York Times as saying, “that he was sure that President Roosevelt would have forbidden the atomic bombing of Hiroshima had he been alive and that it was probably carried out to end the Pacific war before Russia could participate."
Later books quoted I declaring, “I have always condemned the use of the atomic bomb against Japan” and “I made one great mistake in my life…when I signed the letter to President Roosevelt recommending that atomic bombs be made.”
