A magnetic compass consists of a magnetic needle suspended freely above the surface of earth in such a way that it is free to rotate.
The magnetic needle aligns itself along the geographical North-South direction and hence we are able to find the required direction with the help of the compass.

hope it helps.... .

A pair of compasses, also known simply as a compass, is a technical drawing instrument that can be used for inscribing circles or arcs. As dividers, they can also be used as tools to measure distances, in particular on maps.

Most instruments are used within the field of geometry, including the ruler, dividers, protractor, set square, compass, ellipsograph, T-square and opisometer
