It is said that 'you copy someone you admire'. The deepest darkest inner most desire is actually to share the spoils of someone who has come up with an idea, a concept, a brilliant scheme and you want a piece of it.

Actually it varies from person to person, also, what are you copying? if you are simply copying someone's hairstyle, it usually means you admire that someone and want to look like him or her. You are aware there is not plagiarism laws in copying a hairstyle.

However, if you try to nick someone's product design into the market, then that is a concept revolving around ethics. Financial gains and popularity out-weighs ethics and morals then. Reasons for imitating someone vary and the ideology behind it is different for different purposes.

The ideology behind an imitation needs to be moral and ethical, however, not considered necessarily a good thing. Originality brings a certain class. One wants to get the same benefits as others, be it a hairdo or a product in the market, and that is definitely a constant in this concept.

The meaning of expression 'Imitation is the sincerest form of larceny', is 'copying is a type of stealing'. The word 'larceny' means the crime of stealing something from someone. 'Imitation' means 'copying'.

The creative people in this are very few and rare; so when they create something new and stylish, other people usually copy their creativity. It can be a piece of poetry, essay, story, song, acting, painting, fashion, etc. So the expression means copying is a form of stealing.
