▶Social Media is nothing but an extension of our physical existence in the online world. The same rules have to apply on social media as well.

The basic rule while deciding what can be said and what cannot be said is simple. Ask a simple question - Does my action take away another innocent person’s right ? If is the answer is “yes”, you have no right to do it. As simple as that.

Coming to your question - Speech which is protected in real life is protected on social media as well.

So, insulting or criticizing a political party or a public personality does come under the ambit of free speech but spreading malicious rumors does not. The restrictions on Sedition, Defamation and incitement to violence apply on social media is regular manner.

This was about what is allowed by law. However, in usual social media websites usually have their own set of restrictions as well. For instance Brainly does not allow impolite language (a restriction which will be laughable in real world), Facebook does not allow abusive, derogatory comments. You have to keep in mind these restrictions as well.

Apart from this, it is our duty to not deliberately make the social media experience unpleasant. Some things like trolling, though not illegal are unethical. Tolerance and acceptance of contradictory ideas is paramount on social media. Voicing of disagreement should also be polite. Ultimately, social media is what you make of it.

Hope it helps!!!
