Impact of climate change on rice production in india

• Simulated rainfed rice yields decrease under climate change alone due to increases in temperature that shorten the growing season for rice. For some sites, however, sharp decreases in precipitation also are an important factor in the decreased yield of rainfed rice.

•Rice yields simulated under automatic. irrigation also decrease. Although irrigation cannot fully compensate for the negative effects of climate change, it can significantly improve rice yields, especially in regions where precipitation decreases under climate change conditions.

• In rainfed rice, the direct effects of CO2 compensate for the negative effects of climate change alone in most sites, except in sites where rainfall sharply decreases in the climate change scenarios.

• In irrigated rice, the three GCM scenarios show that the modeled rice yields increase in comparison with the baseline yields in the northern sites, but decrease in the central and southern sites. These findings suggest that there is less compensation by the physiological effects of CO2 in areas with high temperature.
