Under the many kings and emperors who ruled India prior to the Islamic rulers, the country has had a rich art and architectural past. With the advent of Islamic rulers, this progressed further and developed into various new styles that are evident even today.

Islam objected to paintings, dance and music. But in architecture, there was no such restrictions. As most of the Islamic rulers were lovers of such art forms, over a period of time, the situation changed. Dance, music and painting became popular.

Islam also made inroads into the Indian religious and cultural scene during this period.

Quwwat ul-Islam, or Might of Islam was a mosque which was built by the Sultanate in Delhi by Qutb al-Din Aibak.

He later made a sandstone screen in front of the entire mosque, and although it was built in Persian style, the artisans were locals who used local methods like corbelled arches for building these arches.

These arches are made by laying stone blocks on top of each other with the upper block protruding until they meet.

Arabic calligraphy and vegetal motifs were also used.

Thus there was a fusion of Indian and Foreign styles which influenced art and architecture in India.
