Effects:
Loss of Culture and Identity
The movement of the British into Indian lands caused a mix of European culture and language. This caused the Indians to confuse their culture with the Europeans, therefore causing the loss of their culture and their unique identity.
-Economic Problems
The British came in and used the economy of India for their benefit. This caused a huge disruption in their economy and caused the government to no longer run industries. It also caused the gov to become dependent on the British’s money which hurt them even more.
-Poverty
The poverty of all the people and some government officials was caused by the disruption of their economy and poverty is slowly getting worse. There is just not enough money available in India and they are very close to bankruptcy. This was caused by the economic problems.
- Caste conflicts/ segregation
British imperialism and life in India also divided the castes in India. Rich Europeans rose to the top of society and took lots of Indian jobs. The British thought they were better than the Indians, which quickly led to the intense segregation that is still there today.
-Wars and battle conflicts
Since the British came into India and claimed it as their own, India has been in three wars, two of which were disputes about what land the Indians owned and what land the British owned. This has also created tons of debt for India because of the the cost that is put into wars and treaties.
-Famine
When the British came they demanded the Indians grow cash crops. The Indian farmers did what they were told. So to create farmland, huge areas of trees had to be cleared. This brought poor soil and hard land to farm. When the British pulled out of India they left the farms to the Indians, which they couldn’t uphold the farms. Therefore, they weren’t producing enough food which created widespread famine across the land.
Imperialism obviously caused these problems all throughout India, but it also caused some good things:
-New western technologies
Better medicine, transportation, and war techniques
-Increased population
-Sanitation improved
Overall Imperialism in India can be seen as both a problematic event, and or a helpful event.
