Common salt (sodium chloride) has the following important use in the making of other chemicals:
1) Making of caustic soda in paper industries used in wood fiber processing.
2)Still in the paper industry sodium chloride is used in the manufacture of chlorine which is used in the bleaching of the wood fibers.
3)Sodium chloride is used in making sodium carbonate through the solvay process. The sodium carbonate is used in manufacture of glass, dyes, sodium bicarbonate and other useful compounds.
4)Sodium chloride is used in the soap making process. It is used in precipitation of soap, as soap is not soluble in salt water solution.
5)Sodium chloride is also used in the chloroalkali process to manufature chlorine and giving sodium hydroxide also as a by-product.
The chlorine formed is used in industries in the manufacture of detergents, bleach, PCV's and chemical solvents.
The sodium hydroxide is used in the manufacure of paper, aluminium and soap.
6) Sodium chloride is also used in the making of fertilizers
7) Common salt is also used in the making of rubber and polyesters.
