Cottage and small scale industries were very important as the finer quality was produced here. These were unable to compete with the Manchester goods so, started using fly shuttles. It improved the quality, reduced the annual time taken, and increased the produce per worker. They produced two types of clothes one was coarser and the other was of finer quality. As poor people could not buy clothes at a regular basis but the selling of Banarsi sarees could not be affected as rich do not get affected by famines. They were a part of the world economy.
