The reason desert plants have thorn-like leaves and leaves that are usually thin is to reduce the surface area of interactions with the atmosphere. These types of leaves also have a reduced number of stomata. These physiological structures help to reduce the surface area of the leaf, which subsequently reduces the chance of water loss and other nutrient loss due to the hot humid environments in the desert.
