Environmental engineers need to be good in chemistry because pollutants are chemicals too, and in order to fight pollution — one should know the properties of these chemicals.

Environmental chemistry is not only an important subject, but also a obligatory one… because, without this subject, one cannot completely understand other subjects and topics of ‘Environmental sciences and engineering’ (like water treatment and sewage treatment etc.).

Subjects relating to Water, Sewage/wastewater, Air pollution, Soil contamination, Management of Solid Waste — deals with lot of chemistry. They all involve technical terms relating to chemistry like pH, BOD, COD, TOC, Red-ox potential, VOCs etc.

You don’t have to know every reaction, every value… but, just think and understand — what is going on in the system under observation
