Answer:

Importance of forests

Our survival depends on plants and trees of the forests. The oxygen of the air that we breathe to stay alive is released by trees. Through the process of photosynthesis, trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. This reduces the level of harmful carbon dioxide when the air and decreases the cases of lung cancer and respiratory diseases in human beings.

Forests are home to many animals and birds. Many animals feed on tree leaves to survive. Trees offer shade to us as well as our cattle and wildlife.

The roots of trees prevent soil erosion by wind and water. The absence of forests and trees leads to the desertification of fertile land. The decrease of trees leads to the expansion of deserts. The roots of trees retain rainwater in the soil. This rainwater is then available to us in springs and wells during the dry seasons. Without trees rainfall decreases and cultivation becomes impossible. With crop failure due to droughts, there will be food famine caused by a shortage of food. The major reason for the scarcity of drinking water is the indiscriminate felling of trees in the forest.

Many trees, shrubs, and herbs of the forests have medicinal values and save lives. Trees reduce air and noise pollution. Trees also add beauty to our surroundings. The quality and the very survival of all life forms depend on how much surface of the Earth is covered by trees.

But despite our dependence on trees, we are continuing to cut them down. This is one of the main reasons for the alarming climate change and global warming. We must protect our forests and stop the felling of trees immediately. We have to take up plantation of trees on a large scale to maintain the ecological balance of nature so that life can flourish.
