The performance of a receiving earth station depends on a number of factors. The most important of these are the receiving antenna gain and the low noise converters noise figure. If all else is equal designers can make trade offs between these factors and achieve equal performance. This has led to the idea of a single "gain to temperature ratio" as a figure of merit to characterise overall earth station performance.
