Heredity and environment are the two most potent factors that influence a child’s growth, learning, and development. If the son of a doctor becomes a doctor, it is the case of hereditary factors dominating the environment; however, if the son of a cobbler becomes a doctor, it is the case of environmental factors dominating.
Heredity is biological in nature. Heredity refers to set of genes, traits, etc. received from parents at the time of conception. These genes determine a child’s physical and mental build up. It has been researched that hereditary factors are important, but not as important as environmental factors are.
Environment factors are outer or external factors. Factors such as social, moral, economic, cultural influences one receives from the surroundings.
A teacher must have a thorough knowledge about both the hereditary and environmental factors as they play a pivotal role in learning and coping with the stress involved in learning. Keeping in mind the hereditary traits of students, he must try to create a learning conducive environment for the students. He can do this only if he has thorough knowledge of hereditary and environmental factors or influences.
