It can be dealt in two fragments.

Hindi the face of India. You like it or not u have to accept it. Yes we have 22 official languages apart from nearly 6000 local languages and dialects to be added. Though we are multi ethnic and multi linguistics if there is one language that has the eligibility to represent India in an International forum it is Hindi. Since we live in the age of post colonial era the popular thing will always be the best representative than the most stuffed and elite one which was the norm back then in the colonial era. If that would have been the time I would like to say Sanskrit , Tamil and Pali represents India better.

And personally I staunchly oppose imposition of hindi and not the importance of hindi.

But Hindi is the language that can be understood by majority of Indians easily other than thier mother tongue at least in the gangetic plains and north of vindhyas. Though I don't know Hindi and can't understand a single bit of it I was really proud when the prime minister addressed in Hindi in the UNGA. For that matter I would have been equally proud even if he had addressed in Gujarati  or any other Indian language for that matter.
