ANSWER:

15 August is a memorable day in our history since on this day we gain independence from the British colonial rule.

Therefore, this day is celebrated as gazetted holiday which means national, state, regional offices, "post-offices and banks" remain closed on this day. At the mid-night of 15th august 1947, British government transferred the powers to Indian leaders thus ending the oppressive colonial rule that lasted for many years.

On 15 August 1947, "first prime minister of India", Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru unfurled the tricolor flag on Red fort and addressed the nation with his famous speech known as tryst with destiny. Every year prime minister of India unfurls flag on red fort and addresses the nation.

Several cultural programs are conducted on this day in various schools and organizations. People fly kites on this day which symbolize the free spirit of India.
