Janaki Mandir is one of the greatest pilgrimage sites for Hindus in Nepal. Situated in the heart of Janakpur, this temple has a huge religious and cultural importance. It is also known as ‘Naulakha temple’, because it took nine lakhs (Nine-Hundred Thousands Rupees) to build it in the 19th century. In the Hindu epics, the Janaki Mandir is highly venerated as a place where Sita had chosen her husband, Lord Rama, during Swayamvar. History of Janaki Mandir
It is probably one of the most expensive constructions of that time. The mix construction style of Mughal and Koiri domes can be seen in this temple. Comprises of fifty feet height, 4,860 sq feet area and the three storied structure entirely made up of marble and stones, this temple is highly revered by Hindu followers. The significance of this temple is also notably found in the popular Hindus holy book Ramayana. Dedicated to goddess Sita, this temple is said to be a birthplace of goddess Sita and her golden statue was found in this place in 1657. The temple was made in the same place where the idol of goddess Sita was found. Various vestiges of 11th and 12th century are also found in this place. The Janaki Mandir was built by Queen of an Indian state- Tikamgarh, Vrisha Bhanu Kumari in 1910.

Goddess Sita is the daughter of King Janak of Mithila Kingdom. It is believed that in the Palace of King Janak. There was a huge Bow and nobody can carry it in their hands. While King Janak was seeking for a prince for his daughter to get married. And Sita demanded to marry the prince who can carry the bow. The Mithila King Janak announced a ceremony and called all the princes from different Kingdoms for her daughter. A competition was held between the princes. Nobody was able to carry the Bow and in the turn of Ayodhya King Rama, he easily carried the bow and the bow spat into pieces. King Janak became happy by seeing the strength and power of Lord Rama and gave his daughter to him, according the Holy Ramayana.
Another legend states that the Janaki Mandir was built in the holy site where Sanyasi Shurkisordas has found the idols and images of Sita. The saint Shurkisordas was also the founder of modern Janakpur. Shurkisordas also preached about the Sita upasana. Some people also say that the Janaki Mandir was established in the place where the worship of Shiva Dhanus was performed by King Janak.
Festivals Celebrated in Janaki Mandir
The festive occasions Ram Navami, Vivaha Panchami, Dashain, Tihar and Chhath are celebrated bombastically in Janakpur. Many devotees from Nepal, India, Sri Lanka and other countries come here to worship and visit this temple. Thousands of pilgrims come to this temple every year to visit. And in a particular occasion, called Vivaha Panchami, falls in the month of November and December, many people visit to the Janaki Mandir. The marriage ceremony of the Goddess Sita and Lord Rama has celebrated on this day and many conjugal couples visited this temple to get married, wishing for a happy married life.

The Janaki Temple lies in Dhanusa district of Nepal. There are around 70 temples and 27 monuments in Janakpurdham. Situated at an altitude of 27 m. above sea level, this place is one of the greatest pilgrimage sites for Hinduism followers. This temple is also nominated for UNESCO’s world heritage site and as on the date of April, 2019, this site is under inspection and probable for the world heritage site as a place of greatest value. It is already designated as the tentative heritage site by UNESCO in 2008.

How to reach Janakpur?
Janakpur is 225 KM southeast of Kathmandu valley and takes around 6 hours drive to reach there. Beside the drive, flight options are also available. Janakpur is the 7th largest city of Nepal and 3rd largest in the Terai region of Nepal. The only railway service is in operation in Janakpur. The railway links Janakpur to Siraha and India border and goes to Jaynagar of India.
