a democratic government is described as a government which is 'by the people, for the people and of the people'. the role of laws in any form of government is to maintain peace and order in society. But, what makes it different in the democratic setting is that these laws are not only sanctioned for the common people but the persons in authority are also answerable before the law. the very essence of the word democracy denotes equality and in this way everyone is equal before the law. thus, its importance could be established as follows:
it avoids the 'survival of the fittest'.
it instills fear in minds of people.
helps in smooth functioning of the state.
protects the interests of the minorities.
enhance the development of individuals as citizens.
prove to be an instrument of social control.
lessen the chances of criminal act if sanctioned properly, etc
