If you stay in Maharashtra, it will help you to communicate with the masses example, daily commute, shopkeepers, government offices, office colleagues etc.If you are planning to move somewhere in Maharashtra, learning Marathi will help you mingle with the locals ( This is true for any region and any country).

If you stay outside Maharashtra where there is a big Marathi speaking population like Baroda, Indore, Goa etc you can learn Marathi to mix with them and learn about the Maharashtrian culture.

If you want to learn maximum number of languages, Marathi is a good option because most words come from Sanskrit, the script is Devanagari (I am assuming the person knows Hindi)

If you are not planning to stay in Maharashtra, but a language buff, learning Marathi is a very good option. You can have access to good literature, ideas, plays and movies and songs. Marathi boasts a big amount of good work in these areas. I can give examples if needed.

But it is unfortunately also true that without learning the language you can survive in the world (or even Maharashtra) if you speak Hindi/English
