It was the first attempt at an all-India mass struggle against the British.

(i) It clearly demonstrated that thousands of poor Indians were capable of courage, sacrifice and ability to face repression and suffering.

(ii) The movement was no longer limited to a few urban educated persons. Thousands of people walked side by side, fought oppression for months, the movement became wider in its scope, people realised the strength of their unity.

(iii) It turned the Congress into a nationalist organisation and became a national movement.

Non cooperation movement had the following relevance in the national movement:

 

a.Non cooperation movement as led by Gandhi, infused new energy in the nationalist struggle , making it a mass movement.

b. People found new ways of venting their voice and dissent.

c. Its methods like surrender of titles, Boycott of schools and colleges, boycotting of council elections, picketing up of foreign shops became new methods of showing discontentment.

d. Khadi became a new symbol of national unity.

e. It inculcated a sense of nationalism.                                

f. It targeted the British administration, which aimed at paralyzing the British administration, making them realize that they cannot function without the active support of Indians.

g. It did bring about Hindu Muslim unity.
