In many parts of the world, natural resource management is changing from approaches that were only science-based towards approaches involving local people as an essential management tool. Management structures in which outside agencies impose ‘ready-made’ solutions are being replaced by approaches aiming for local knowledge sharing and inclusive decision-making processes. Successful communication is the key to this participatory approach which emphasises local ownership over the management process.

Natural resource managers find they needto continually adapt to changing demands by stakeholders and growing pressureson resources. They need skills in listening, consulting and negotiation, aswell as skills that encourage community participation in resource management.

A booklet from the International DevelopmentResearch Centre, Canada, and the Food and Agriculture Organization, Italy, examines a range of field experiences to demonstrate how communicationcan be a driver for innovation in natural resource management.
