Photographs are an essential resource for researching Indian modern history. Documents, archaeological sites, artifacts, oral history, features, paintings, stone inscriptions, images (movies and photographs), recorded noises, and oral history are all examples of historical sources. Even items found in old ruins serve as historical sources.
Primary source photographs are extremely valuable. They provide a unique opportunity to capture a unique moment that will never occur again. This is especially true of historical occurrences before the advent of digital technologies and television. Through the documentation of the scene and the current reality, photographs help us understand an incident.
Early in the 19th century, the British introduced photography to India. The British government and the princely state leaders supported the earliest photographers. However, these photographs are important evidence to portray what actually happened in India during the British regime.
