Answer:

There are many reasons to save energy, their relative importance being different to different people. Using less energy can have positive results ecologically, financially, and personally, and the very act of trying to reduce energy use increases an individual's awareness of the surrounding environment and the effect that we all have on it. Using resources efficiently leads to a lessened impact on the environment, lower operating costs for businesses and households, and a cleaner and more organized way of life for everyone.

Explanation:

Saving energy is important for all the reasons listed in this thread. Additionally, saving energy is the easiest way to ensure that you have enough energy to do the things you want to do. If we all continued to run our AC on high when we weren’t home, or have high wattage incandescent bulbs, the likelihood of having rolling black or brown outs, similar to what happened in New York some years back would be significantly higher. No one wants to have their power go out at a critical moment. By saving energy, being a good steward of global and personal resources you help to ensure that everyone has enough. The ultimate consequence is that there are fewer non-renewable and renewable generation needs which results in fewer environmental and health impacts.

We only have so much of nonrenewable energy. At some point, we will run out of oil. We also only drill so much oil per year, which is another limit. And every barrel of oil we burn is more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere contributing to global warming.

And even with renewables, there are limits. The sun gives us about a kilowatt per square meter. But solar panels aren't efficient, so we can only get maybe 250 watts per meter^2. And solar panels are kind of expensive, so we only install what we need and can afford. And they don't produce energy at night and battery packs are really expensive and can only store a little bit of energy.

The short answer is we conserve energy because we are approaching the limits of what the earth can provide and in the area of global warming we have already exceeded it.
