Answer:

Surat is a city in the Indian state of Gujarat. It used to be a large seaport and is now a centre for diamond cutting and polishing and textile industries.

People from distant lands visited Surat because of the following reasons:

(i) Surat was the gateway for trade with West Asia via the Gulf of Ormuz.

(ii) Surat has also been called the gate to Mecca because many pilgrim ships set sail from here.

The two great sources that contributed to the wealth and prosperity of the city were foreign commerce and domestic manufactures. Surat was a commercial emporium, besides such commodities as indigo, spices and cloths. Many important goods imported from Europe were sold in its markets. Cotton cloth was the most important item of export. European merchants exported muslin from Dhaka, silk from Banaras and cotton textiles from Surat, Ahmedabad and Madurai.

Surat, previously known as Suryapur, is a city in the Indian state of Gujarat. Surat - the modern port city of today boasts of a great historical and cultural heritage. The history of Surat takes us back to the epic age of Mahabharata and Ramayana.
