Portia is one of the most important character of the merchant of Venice.

Everything happened due to her means the loan taken was because of her and Antonio's life was saved because of her.

Let's see how?

Bassanio asked for a loan from Antonio because of Portia as he wanted to show him off as a suitor there for which he wanted money and so Shylock's play and role and everything related to the bond story came through her.
When Antonio was standing in the court and everyone was sure for his death Portia came and saved Antonio by her skills and mind.

Hope this helps.....

Explanation:

Portia is intelligent, and has great strength and integrity. Her loyalty to her father is unquestionable. Though she feels hemmed in by the terms of her father's will, she is loyal- unlike Jessica. Her quick intelligence and presence of mind are shown in the excellant planning which demands spot desicions. Not one plan backfires. The trial seems like a cake walk for her such is her poise and control. The trail does not exhaust her; no sooner than it concludes, she has the sprightly wit to create an opportunity to nail Bassanio by demanding the ring. Her innate grace never leaves her be it while acting the part of a bragging youth or masquerading as a learned lawyer, pulling up Bassanio for the loss of the ring or expressing sadness over her inability to exercise her will.
