Importance of tropism in plants

What is the biological importance of tropism to plants? Tropism is direction-dependent plant response to stimuli. Phototropism is growth towards (aphototropism=away from) light. Gravitropism so roots grow down and seedlings to grow up, hydrotropism to find water, heliotropism is movement following the sun.
