Wit and Humor can be related. But they don’t have to be.

If someone called you “witty” they are essentially saying that you are good at relating two (apparently) different things or people in an intelligent and humorous way. Wit works at its best when it is said on the heels of someone else’s comment.

Here’s an example:

MAN: If I can’t have you, I’ll die.

WOMAN: You promise?

In the above example the woman is basically responding to the man in an insulting way. Her comment is rather dark and yet, it’s still witty. It’s witty because she’s ignoring the first part of what he said and getting to the him “dying” part. She knows that his comment was said in hyperbolic fashion. And she’s responding in kind.

Humor can be intelligent or unintelligent. Things said humorously are usually given away by the smile or laugh of the person delivering the humor
