In South India especially in Tamilnadu , the classical dance form "bharatanatyam" . evolved as a temple dance. The chola rulers patronised this dance ,it is a beautiful form of dance and requires precise hand and foot movements along with expressions renered through eyes and lips. It is the oldest dance form of India the costume used in this dance is coloured and rich.
In a North India Kathak evolve as a distinct dance form. The term Kathak is derived from the word "Katha" which means story. The Kathakaar cast of store retailers attached to the temples using gestures and songs they told stories in praise of God, soon the Nawab of the regional kingdoms also patronised it. Different gharanas of Kathak evolved such as Lucknow and Jaipur .Lucknow gharana is known for its Grace and facial expression the Jaipur gharana is known for its fast rhythms.
kathakali is a dance form of Kerala which is believed to have originated in the 16th century CE ,it is a highly stylish classical Indian dance characterized by the usage of stunning costume and heavy makeup. This is to emphasize that the characters are super beings from another world. it deals with the stories of Hindu gods lord Rama and lord Krishna.
Odissi is based on the popular devotion to lord Krishna and the verses of geet Govind are used to depict the love and devotion to God, these odissi dancers use their had the bust and body in soft flowing movements to express the specific moods and emotions.
Manipuri dance style was also called "Jagoi" which means circular movement in ancient text it has been compared to the movement of the planets around the sun ,this dance form evolved in Manipur.
